2 Collector Terms you need to know before you collect, a neat little tip and an interview with an expert in the rare newspaper business! I’m Tammy Kahn Fennell and this is collectibles corner TV, the show for savvy collectors.

This episode i have two interesting terms for you. If you watch this show regularly you might want to write these down for the quiz. Just kidding, no quiz, but it’s so important to know terms when collecting so you make sure you know what you’re buying!

(Screen “bakelite”)

Bakelie is an inexpensie plastic that became popular in the 1930s and 40s.

READING: It was used as a material for all sorts of items, like jewerly, cameras, billiard balls and radios. A quick search on ebay brings up over 4,000 results, so it’s definitely an easy collectible to get started with! Some jewerly can run you $10-$20 while an Emerson Bakelite radio can go for over $2000!

(Screen “Engraving”)
When dealing in bound periodicals you often find this word tossed around.

READING: An engraving is really a generic term for any image on paper made from a design incised into a palte and then inked and printed. There are different types including Line, stipple, etching, aquatint and mezzotint. It can also be used to describe the technique used on metal to create decoration or writing by cutting away material with a metal tool.

Now it’s time for a viewer question with Ask Tammy

(Screen: “Ask Tammy”)

This question comes from Bob in California. Bob asks:

READING: Hi Tammy! I’ve inherited a small comic book collection and i’ve heard that I might get more money for them if they are ‘graded’? How do you feel about this?

Bob brings up a common dilemma. To grade or not to grade! When i sell comics online, i tend to sell them ungraded, and i’ll use the overstreet comic book price guide to help me determine the condition, but I’m always careful to under-grade b/c comic book buyers are very particular.

READING:You do get more money if you grade a comic, but it’s pricey. So my advice would be, if you have a rare book that overstreet says is worth over $3000 in the condition you believe it to be, then grading would probably work out the best. But remember, once it goes in the slab, there’s no getting it out unless you’re prepared to have it re-graded!

Bob wins 3 months of Collectibles For The Future! The ultimate resource for savvy collectors!

READING (SHOW SCREEN SHOTS):You can ask me your question at the ASK TAMMY link here on collectibles corner TV.com and it may even get read on the show! If you’re watching this and you’re not on collectibles corner TV.com, please check it out - it has tons of resources you don’t want to miss!

Now it’s time for a treasure hunter tip!

(Screen “Treasure Hunter Tips”)

This week I have a really cool resource.

READING: It’s ebay saved searches! Most people dont’ realize that ebay actually has a way to save your favorite searches so you can quickly find what it is you’re looking for. You can even organize it so a snapshot of all your searches shows up on your summary page. It’s completely free and will help you to never miss your favorite collectible!

Make sure you tune in each episode to learn all these little tips that other collectors just don’t know about!

This episode I travelled to Pennsylvania to the largest rare newspaper dealers in the country to learn more about collecting paper.

(Screen “Tammy on the Road”)

(2 videos from Tim Hughes.)

And that was this episode’s “Tammy on The Road.” Who knows where i’ll turn up next! If you have any ideas be sure to let me know! I’d also love to hear your comments.

READING (show screenshot):You can comment under this video at collectiblescornertv.com!
