“We come across a pair of what looks like charcoal sketches.  Mostly black in color and only some green and red in a few places.  I haven't been able to find the pair anywhere.  One has a little girl seems alarmed and is sitting on a  fence holding cut flowers and there is a large crow with his beak up.  The other is a boy sitting on a fence with a similar scene.  While the characters are typical Hummel the surrounding trees and birds seem somewhat dark in nature.  This is certainly different than how she usually portrays the children as cheerful.  Since she was drawing in such a distressful time with the war perhaps these were her expression of that distress.  They both have the Hummel signature.  They are framed and the back is intact.  It looks to have been reframed since the early years, still the frames looks somewhat old with some rust.  Nails are rusted where the frames were repaired.  We are trying to figure out if these are just prints or original sketches.  We did not want to tear open either of them to find out.  Can you help us figure it out?  Just out of common sense I carefully looked at each of the drawings and the paper seems wavy like drawing paper would look over time.  It also has a glistening effect under the glass that might indicate that charcoals were used.”
