Goebel Co-Boys

Hello,

Once in awhile, I like to purchase a Goebel Co-Boy as a gift.  I never even knew that there were 2 series of them produced until an Ebayer alerted me to the fact that he noticed I would buy first series, and did I know that the current seller was selling second series disguosed as the first, which are more valuable.

Unfortunately, I couldn;t find very much information abou tthe Co-Boys online, and there is inconsistent information.

From what I could gather, the first series Co-boys were produced from 1971-1987, so technically, the Co-Boys could bear trademarks from TMK3 through TMK6.  (In fact, some co-boys, like Walter the Jogger, were not even in production until the TMK6 period.)

Do you know for sure when/what year the second series was produced?  If it was in 1994, for example, then all Co-Boys with TMK 7 would be the second series, and I could use the TMK as a guide.

Also, I noticed from some listings on ebay and other sale sites that the Co-Boys have “Well #s”, for example,  Walter the Jogger, introduced in 1980, has “Well # 545″.  But on other listings, they state a longer seriel number, such as “17645-14″.  Is this another way to tell the difference between first series and second series?

Also, I noticed some Co Boys for sale have orange tags (i.e., orange story cards) on them.  Did both series have orange story cards, or did the first series have a different kind of story card?  Is this another way to tell the difference?

Thanks in advance for all your help, I really appreciate it!

Hi!

Okay so there's not a ton of info available on co-boys. The trademark (http://www.vintagerarestuff.co…..ating.html) is one way to tell the earlier ones. The earliest Co boy i've ever seen is a TMK 4 from 1971. Most are Tmk 5 and Tmk 6. All of the ones made in germany fall into TMK 4 5 or 6 :) The well number vs the serial number does not, from what i know, change the location from germany to taiwan or wherever the new ones are.

Hi,

My understanding ids that the Co-Boys are not being made anymore — does anyone know when the second series was made?  One website said the second series was in production in 1994, but I can't confirm that.

I'm looking into it. I know they are definitely not being made anymore. In fact, Goebel stopped making a lot of items. Linda would probably be better able to assist with this - she's on a trip for the next few days though :)

Hi, the best way is trademark. If you see there is a trademark 5 for a gnome, and you see the same gnome as trademark 6, well the 6 is a second series. but it really doesn't matter as they are produced to the exact same specifications…

First, from what I'm seeing on the internet from other collector sites, the “second series” featured smaller, less detailed figures than the first series, and was produced years after the first series.

So, no, the second series absolutely was not produced to the same specifications, and wasn't even produced in the same factory (i.e., West Germany) as the first series.

Second, since the first series was produced from 1970-1987, a TMK6 for a first series is not at all unusual.  If I can confirm with a collectables or Goebel expert when the second series was produced (for example, after 1991), then the TMK would certainly help (i.e., a TMK 7 = second series.)

I had hoped someone on this forum would have some of the answers or places to look, since the only Goebel Co-boy book on the market is your e-book.  I will contact Robert Miller and the Kovels and see if they can help.
