Overwinding is an old wives tale.

If you want your clock to run a week  and chime  and or strike at peak performance wind it  all the way.

Many people have the notion that winding a clock  will somehow harm it. Winding it gives it the power needed to run and perform all of its functions over the weeks span of time.

If  it stops after winding  the clock has a mechanical problem.
